THE LOWDOWN

CADIZ

Under the management of Sergio, Cadiz are one of a few stereotypically modern day Spanish top-flight sides as they are very rugged and quite dull to watch but often squeeze out results, especially in Andalusia. That was shown by the low-scoring but congested bottom-half of the table last season whereby seven teams went into the final day not sure of their safety, including Cadiz.

They began the season with a 1-0 win at home to Alaves with Fede scoring an early winning goal and the survived the last few minutes of the match with just ten men after Gonzalo Escalante was sent off in the 88th minute. After that, they went to Catalonia to face the reigning champions and in typical Cadiz fashion, frustrated Barcelona, eventually conceding goals in the 82nd and 90th minute to lose 2-0 at Monduit.

ALMERIA

Almeria gained promotion to the top-flight in the summer of 2022 and they managed to avoid relegation on the final day of the campaign in what was a very competitive battle down at the bottom end of La Liga last season. The Andalusians have since lost their key forward player, El Bilal Toure, to Atalanta for a fee that is believed to be in the region of £26.5 million.

They have started this season with back-to-back defeats and another long battle against finishing in the bottom three does seem very likely for this one. They firstly began with a 2-0 loss at home to a Rayo Vallecano side that are also expected to struggle this season before losing 3-1 at home to a very strong looking Real Madrid side. They did take the lead in that game but a Jude Bellingham brace and a Vinicius Junior goal gave Los Blancos all three points.

THE TEAM NEWS

CADIZ

Sergio is once again getting his Yellow Submarine to compete at a level above what they should probably be capable of, especially with the injuries they have, and their squad is getting smaller so it is unlikely to see any changed for this one, even though Gonzalo Escalante has returned from his suspension.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Ledesma; Carcelen, L Hernandez, Fali, J Hernandez; Alejo, Alcaraz, Fede, Machis; Roger, Ramos

UNAVAILABLE: Mere (Injured), Chust (Injured), Guardiola (Injured), Cala (Injured), Ocampo (Injured)

ALMERIA

Vicente Moreno is without two key players, Leo Baptistao and Martin Svidersky, as he continues his search for answers to avoid Rojiblancos being dragged into the mire this season.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Maximiano; Pubill, Chumi, E Gonzalez, Akieme; Robertone, Baba; Embarba, Arribas, Ramazani; Suarez

UNAVAILABLE: Baptistao (Injured), Svidersky (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is an Andalusian derby between two sides that are expected to, once again, be battling against relegation. La Liga has become renowned for its defensive, dull, reactive style of football that is deployed by the majority of clubs and even last season’s reigning champions Barcelona went against their natural club identity to play in such a manner. This one could well be the absolute epitome of that style of football and, regardless of who comes out on top, it is unlikely that we see three or more goals in this one.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
