THE LOWDOWN

QUETTA GLADIATORS

  • Quetta Gladiators may not have emerged victorious in their opening PSL match of the new campaign, but they showed promise against Peshawar Zalmi and and backed up their positive display with another impressive performance last time out against Karachi Kings, this time securing a comfortable win.
  • It would be a surprise if Quetta were to change their side following such a dominant display, so the likes of batter Dan Lawrence will likely have to wait once again for an opportunity, particularly when taking into account the form of fellow English overseas batter Will Smeed.

MULTAN SULTANS

  • Multan Sultans have made the perfect start to the defence of their PSL title by winning their first two matches, most recently chasing down 207 with two balls remaining to beat Lahore Qalandars, backing up their victory against Karachi Kings on the opening day of the tournament.
  • Mohammad Rizwan seemingly shrugged off any potential back injury suffered during the match against the Kings as the Multan captain led from the front, hitting his second successive half-century of the competition in a 150-run stand for the first wicket with Shan Masood, laying the foundations for a successive run chase.

THE PREDICTION

Quetta Gladiators like Lahore, are expected to give Multan Sultans a really tough match here, having proved that they are a far improved team compared to last season when they finished bottom of the group stage with just two victories. Whilst Multan have made an excellent start to the competition so far, should their opening duo of Masood and Rizwan be dismissed early on, then they may well struggle to accumulate the runs required whether they be setting or chasing a target, particularly against 18-year-old fast-bowler Naseem Shah, who has been brilliant for Quetta. Ultimately, the smart play here would be to back the team who bowls first when taking into account that chasing has proven an easier route to victory over the course of this year’s PSL so far thanks largely to the presence of dew making the ball harder to control for the bowlers and easier to bat against.
