THE TEAM NEWS

NEW ZEALAND

  • New Zealand picked up a thoroughly comprehensive win in the opening ODI in Dunedin and they will be confident of wrapping up the series in Christchurch as the Hagley Oval hosts its first ever day/night one-day international.
  • The foundations for the victory were led by the bowling unit and Trent Boult in particular as he took 4/27 and they caused the tourists all kinds of problems even without Tim Southee which they will look to replicate here.
  • The likelihood is that they name an unchanged eleven for this game especially given Ross Taylor was ruled out of this game with injury once again so it is difficult to see them changing a winning formula here.

BANGLADESH

  • Bangladesh were outplayed in the first ODI so after producing a dismal batting performance which saw them struggle to cope with the pace and swing of the Blackcaps’ pace attack so that is something they will have to come to terms with quickly if they are to stay alive in this series.
  • The tourists desperately need openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das to spend longer at the crease and build an innings but they are once again playing on a surface which does favour pace bowlers.
  • Hasan Mahmud was given the nod in the opening game ahead of Mohammad Saifuddin but the latter could come into the side after Mahmud was smashed for 49 runs from his 4.2 overs.

THE PREDICTION

New Zealand were head and shoulders above Bangladesh in the first one-day international in Dunedin and they come into this second game at the Hagley Oval determined to seal the series here. The gulf between the two teams was pronounced to say the least and it will take a major improvement for the tourists to close that gap. They simply have to bat much better against the pace and movement of Trent Boult especially and given their struggles in the first match, they may be tempted to field first if they win the toss. It is hard to imagine how they can push the hosts or even beat them however and with the Blackcaps looking in excellent form, another win for the hosts is on the cards here.
