THE LOWDOWN
Vasiliy Lomachenko will make his long-awaited return to the ring after a shock defeat last time out in what was just the Ukrainian’s second defeat of his career. He went down to Teofimo Lopez in a loss by unanimous decision which saw him surrender his three world lightweight titles and the pressure will be on to respond against a potentially tricky opponent.
Masayoshi Nakatani is 19-1 and has accounted for some impressive fighters along the way, although his only loss came against the man who got the better of Lomachenko last time out in Lopez. A KO of Felix Verdejo in his latest bout at the end of 2020 was an eye-catching success and the 32-year-old from Japan will believe he can cause issues for his rival in this bout.
THE PREDICTION
Vasiliy Lomachenko and Masayoshi Nakatani do battle in what looks to be a superb match-up with the pair both believing that they can come out on top. The Ukranian comes into this fight on the back of just his second loss of his career and will be eager to put that behind him, knowing another loss could leave serious questions marks surrounding his longevity at the upper end of the lightweight division. His Japanese opponent is capable of causing problems having KO’d 13 of the 19 opponents he has beaten to date and while he can be competitive, a focused Lomachenko is a dangerous proposition so expect the Ukrainian to out box his opponent in this one.
