THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Veronika Kudermetova has enjoyed her best, most consistent season on tour so far but she should have ended up with more than just the one title to show for it, with her first WTA 500 trophy claimed in Tokyo last month with a blistering campaign. The 26-year-old reached back-to-back finals at Masters tournaments in Madrid and Rome back on the clay swing but she can be just as effective on hardcourts when her confidence is intact on court. World number 37 Lin Zhu won her maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships back in February and she finished runner-up to Ashlyn Krueger at the Osaka Open last month. The 29-year-old brings a four-match losing streak on tour from that final but she will be desperate to perform as the wildcard and only home player here in Zhuhai.
Kudermetova has won just one of her last three matches since success in Tokyo and home advantage should see Zhu come out fighting. Consider taking Lin Zhu to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance, with Kudermetova still the favourite to end up on top.
