THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Stan Wawrinka is clearly desperate to win a first ATP title since returning from injury and he has worked tirelessly this season to bring a highly unlikely 26-22 record into Metz. The 38-year-old is a popular tour veteran who would be backed to the hilt against any non-native players here but world number 70 Luca Van Assche should receive a near-partisan support as an exciting up-and-comer in French tennis and the 19-year-old beat Wawrinka in three sets in their first encounter at the Banja Luka Open in April. Van Assche snapped a four-match losing streak with an excellent comeback over Botic van de Zandschulp on Monday but Wawrinka should have enough experience in these conditions to level their head-to-head after conceding just two games in his opener over Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Wawrinka should be considered a dark horse for the final at least in Metz but this is certainly a tough fixture. Back the Swiss to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners to leave the result up to chance.
