THE PREDICTION

World number 17 Karolina Pliskova beat number seven Maria Sakkari in straight sets two weeks ago at the Dubai Tennis Championships to take a 3-2 lead in their well-contested head-to-head. The 30-year-old beat 11th seed Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Sunday to back-up a comeback victory over Anna Kalinskaya and she looks a dark horse here with some excellent stats on break point and an improving first-serve percentage. 27-year-old Sakkari continues to struggle to find her best level early and then maintain it when she does. The Greek has twice come back from a set down to beat two tough players in Shelby Rogers and Anhelina Kalinina but she must improve here if she is to emulate her run to the final last season. Sakkari seems to get better after going a set down and that suggests taking the three set option could actually be the best-value move here. Otherwise back Pliskova to earn at least as set as the likelier of two very capable winners. The Czech has won each of their last two matches on hardcourts.
