World number 43 Max Purcell needed three sets to overcome Mitchell Krueger on Tuesday but he will feel better for an early test after a few weeks away. The 25-year-old came perilously close to an incredible victory over 11th seed Casper Ruud at the Australian Open last month, just losing out 10-7 in the deciding tiebreak, but this time last season he was grafting on the Challenger circuit in order to feature more in these moments and he should see it as huge progress.
