21-year-old Diane Parry set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 54th this week after an excellent run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells, where she stunned Leylah Fernandez either side of two eye-catching wins over Anna Blinkova and Martina Trevisan. A three-set exit to eventual runner-up Maria Sakkari attests to the Frenchwoman’s rising level on tour and she has been promising something like this for some time, particularly on the bigger stages, with January’s strong run at the Australian Open her third third-round exit at a major tournament already.
World number 82 Jaqueline Cristian enjoyed a deep run to the semi-finals of the Transylvanian Open last month, before a tight three-set exit to eventual runner-up Ana Bogdan, but she has largely struggled elsewhere on tour this year. The 25-year-old has occasionally shown bursts of top 40 potential but Parry looks set to climb even higher than that over the coming seasons. Three sets seem likelier than two, as is often the case in the Frenchwoman’s matches, but back Parry to reach the second round.
