World number 88 Alexandre Muller kicked off 2024 with an encouraging run to the quarter-finals of the Auckland Classic but he has since struggled to make a dent on tour. The 27-year-old finished runner-up to Roberto Carballes Baena at the Marrakech Open last April and he will be eagerly anticipating a return to European clay after enjoying something of a breakthrough on the surface last spring. Fellow Frenchman Hugo Grenier qualified very handily indeed this week to look the slight favourite in this second clash this season with his compatriot. The world number 145, also 27 years old, stunned Muller in five gruelling sets at the Australian Open in January and he impressed in the following four-set exit to Felix Auger-Aliassime. Back Grenier, with the momentum of qualifying and some strong recent performances behind him, to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors here.
