THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Sumit Nagal came back from a set down to stun Matteo Arnaldi on Monday, claiming the first Masters-level win of his career and Indian tennis’ history. Nagal will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 80th for his efforts, with two vastly impressive wins in qualifying over the weekend, and he has nothing to lose in this intriguing clash with an ot-of-sorts seventh seed.

World number seven Holger Rune finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev here last season, from a set up, but he has struggled for anything like his best level since losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last summer. The Dane is a bullish, brilliant all-court threat at his best but he is certainly one of the more effortless clay-courters on tour, making his next two months on the clay swing hugely important as he tries to get back on the horse. Rune beat Nagal in straight sets at a Davis Cup qualifier last season but this second meeting could be quite the upset if he fails to hit the ground running. The 20-year-old’s straight-sets exit at this stage of the Miami Open last time out suggests Nagal has a genuine chance at history here but the suitably cautious pick is taking Rune to recalibrate to win.

TIP: HOLGER RUNE TO WIN
