THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Daniil Medvedev will return to the top of the ATP world rankings next Monday once Novak Djokovic’s Roland-Garros points drop off but he may struggle to stay there for long once again with Russians and Belarussians banned from playing in the UK this grass swing. There is the slightest scent of an upset here too, for a number of reasons, as he takes on Gilles Simon in the round of 16 of the Libema Open over a week since his loss to Marin Cilic in the fourth round of Roland-Garros. 37-yuear-old Simon only finished his first round match, that began on Tuesday, this morning but a short stint against James Duckworth to come through in straight sets is a great warm-up ahead of this clash against a player who has often struggled transitioning form surface to surface. Furthermore, Simon leads Medvedev 3-0 in their head-to-head with his most recent victory coming at the Marseille Open two years ago and the one before that on grass at Queen’s in 2019.

Medvedev remains the clear favourite to beat Simon for a first time but these factors are very interesting and make taking Simon to snatch at least a set a tempting move. Otherwise, back the Russian to win outright.
