THE PREDICTION

World number 95 Taro Daniel came back from a set down to upset eighth seed Aleksandar Vukic to open his Chengdu account strongly but he looks the slight underdog against a second Aussie. 29-year-old Christopher O’Connell won the Shanghai Challenger earlier this month after an impressive four-set exit to Daniil Medvedev at the US Open to bring a career-high ATP world ranking of 53rd into Chengdu. The Aussie beat qualifier Alibek Kachmazov in straight sets on Thursday to put a poor recent exit on the Challenger circuit behind him but Daniel won their only previous encounter in consummate straight sets at Roland-Garros this summer to make this a tough call any which way. Daniel’s win against in-form Vukic came as quite the surprise so consider taking the Japanese to earn at least a set on momentum to leave the victor up to chance.
