THE PREDICTION

World number eight Casper Ruud beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets on Sunday to look a real dark horse at the Miami Open but he did little to ingratiate himself with fans after calling the tournament “cheap” in an on-court rant. The usually level-headed Norwegian has worked out some kinks in his hardcourt game that saw him labour on the surface last season, already winning well over twice as many matches on the surface this season with recent runner-up finishes in Los Cabos and Acapulco, but frustration may be creeping in after some recent three-set battles with the likes of Gael Monfils, Tommy Paul and Luca Van Assche.

World number 23 Nicolas Jarry has seen his fair share of three-set tussles across the Sunshine Double, with each of his three matches on hardcourts this month needing a decider. The 28-year-old came back from a set down to oust in-form Thiago Seyboth Wild on Sunday, backing-up a lengthy clash with Jack Draper, but Ruud should be one step too far. Ruud finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz here two years ago to show an affinity with the conditions if not, apparently, the tournament itself, and backing him to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors looks a sensible concession at this moment.

TIP: CASPER RUUD TO WIN A SET
