THE PREDICTION
This looks like one of the more competitive first round matches at the Italian Open between former world number seven Madison Keys and in-form Anhelina Kalinina, who is set to reach a career-high WTA world ranking of 36th. The 25-year-old has found the form of her career so far this year with a run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open last week one of her best showings on tour and she beat Keys from a set down at the Miami Open last month in their only previous meeting. Keys is a comfortable all-courter and a former finalist here in Rome from 2016 but she has struggled to impose herself on her last few tournaments after a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open was ended by eventual champion Ash Barty back in January. The American took a set from Maria Sakkari last week in Madrid but Kalinina has recent form on clay and against Keys and that makes backing the Ukrainian to win at least a set the more sensible way to lean here.
