THE LOWDOWN

This is one of the more surprising Masters finals in recent memory considering the form that both players brought with them. World number eight Andrey Rublev was riding a four-match losing streak coming into Madrid, with his on-court confidence spiralling since a humiliating disqualification from the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships in February, but he looked rejuvenated before a remarkable comeback over two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals. The Russian beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets on Friday to look the solid favourite to lift his second Masters title, and it would be a second on clay after claiming his first in Monte-Carlo last season, but Felix Auger-Aliassime’s charmed fortnight makes him an incredible outlier.

23-year-old Auger-Aliassime will move back up to world number 20 after an odd pathway to his first ever Masters final, with Jiri Lehecka pulling up injured early in their first set on Friday to see two of the Canadian’s matches this campaign end by retirement – adding to a full walkover after Jannik Sinner withdrew before they even took to court. The Canadian did stun in-form Barcelona champion Casper Ruud in the round of 16, though, to prove his sudden improvements on what has always proved to be his weakest surface as a player who has yet to win a title outdoors, let alone on clay.

THE PREDICTION

Rublev leads their head-to-head 4-1 after beating Auger-Aliassime from a set down at the Rotterdam Open in February, where the Canadian was defending champion. Four of their five encounters have seen sets go both ways to suggest this could come close but Rublev has earned at least a set in all five of them to offer a suitably cautious way to avoid the result of what has been a madcap Men’s draw in Madrid. Otherwise, back the Russian to build on his two excellent results over Alcaraz and Fritz to lift his second Masters title.

TIP: ANDREY RUBLEV TO WIN A SET
