THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Alex Michelsen reached the Newport Open final on his tour debut back in July, thrilling home crowds before falling foul of veteran Adrian Mannarino. The American should enjoy the conditions in Jeddah more than most as a fast-court lover and he brings some strong form on this surface into the draw, as a real dark horse this week, after reaching back-to-back finals on the Challenger circuit. 20-year-old Hamad Medjedovic is the real anomaly this week, though, with clear future star potential in his powerful game. The Serb set a career-high ATP world ranking of 102nd last month after reaching the semi-finals of the Astana Open with huge upsets over Laslo Djere, Alexander Shevchenko and Jiri Lehecka before a remarkably tight three-set exit to Sebastian Korda but he has failed to win at tour level since and just once on the Challenger circuit. If Medjedovic can burst back into form this week he could be the surprise factor in the final. Back Michelsen to earn at least a set from this first encounter, though, with the better recent form. Alternatively, consider this match a reasonable candidate for five sets.
