THE PREDICTION

World number 67 Aleksandar Vukic grabbed an eye-catching straight-sets opening win over Alexandre Muller, last season’s runner-up in Marrakech, on Tuesday to make a statement of intent. The 27-year-old finished runner-up to Taylor Fritz at the Atlanta Open last summer to prove himself capable of more than perhaps we, or he, expected on tour and he has impressed in patches since, including in taking a set from Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells before defeat.

World number 47 Sebastian Ofner is the second seed this week to suggest this tournament is a wide open opportunity for a handful of unlikely champions. The Austrian, also 27, also enjoyed his best season last year, initially on clay before some strong runs on hardcourts, and he reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros to prove his credentials on this surface. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record below tour level, Vukic winning their hardcourt encounter and Ofner their match on clay, to suggest the Austrian is the slight favourite here. Back Ofner to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: SEBASTIAN OFNER TO WIN A SET
