FPL 2023-24 | Blank Gameweek 29 | Captain Picks

As it stands, this article is being written prior to the conclusion of Double Gameweek 28, therefore we don’t yet know the final score of our recommended captain picks. However, it was a very bad start with Dominic Solanke (£7.2m) missing a penalty and ending up with no points against Sheffield Utd. Luton forward Carlton Morris (£5.2m) also blanked away at Crystal Palace, scoring just 2 points, whilst differential pick Antoine Semenyo (£4.5m) also ended up with 2 fantasy points.

That doesn’t stop us from looking ahead to a vast Blank Gameweek 29 which sees only four Premier League fixtures take place, less than half of a normal English top flight schedule. From those four matches, we offer up three premium captain picks capable of a big FPL score, alongside an alternate differential option ahead of Saturday’s 13:30 deadline.

PREMIUM OPTIONS

Heung-Min Son (£9.9m) vs FUL (a)

When considering the dearth of options on the table, it would be no surprise if Son ended up being the most captained asset in Blank Gameweek 29. Especially on the back of an excellent performance in Double Gameweek 28. Son recorded two assists and a goal himself, racking up 17 FPL points as Spurs thrashed ten-man Aston Villa by four goals to nil. It’s now 30 fantasy points scored for Son over the course of the last four gameweeks.

Spurs will have revenge on their minds against Fulham, having been knocked out of the League Cup by Marco Silva’s side at Craven Cottage earlier in the campaign. The way Ange Postecoglou sets his team up from an offensive perspective usually leads to plenty of chances, which bodes well for those who choose to place the armband on Son.

Ollie Watkins (£9.1m) vs WHU (a)

Despite a blank from Ollie Watkins against Spurs, the Aston Villa forward has been in excellent goalscoring form and with a premium ownership percentage which stands at over the half the total FPL community, not naming Watkins as your skipper in Blank Gameweek 29 would be a risky play to make. Across the last six gameweeks, the 28-year-old has accumulated three double-figure fantasy score and 57 FPL points.

Watkins boasts five goals and an assist from his last four Premier League appearances and also poses a significant attacking threat for Aston Villa under Unai Emery. Against a West Ham side who have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last eight league fixtures, expect Watkins to be involved in the majority of Villa’s offensive openings.

Jarrod Bowen (£8.7m) vs AVL (H)

Whilst Watkins is Villa’s key FPL asset and premium captain pick in Blank Gameweek 29, Jarrod Bowen arguably holds the same status within the West Ham team. With the Hammers welcoming back numerous attacking bodies, Bowen is likely to play in his favoured position on the right-hand-side which may well increase the possibility of a successful FPL output.

Owners of Bowen won’t have forgotten his hat-trick and 20-point-haul at home to Brentford in Gameweek 26 and despite having only gained one assist and 7 points in the two gameweeks since then, his fantasy ceiling has proven to be extremely high. No doubt Bowen is well worth considering as your Blank Gameweek 29 captain.

DIFFERENTIAL OPTION

Brennan Johnson (£5.8m) vs FUL (a)

Whilst most eyes will be on Son when it comes to choosing a Spurs midfield asset to captain in Blank Gameweek 29, Brennan Johnson offers FPL managers a viable and enticing differential option. Like Son, Johnson has been piling up the attacking returns recently, with four in his last four appearances. On the back of consecutive 8-point scores, now feels like a good time to cash in on the Welsh international from an FPL perspective.

The reverse fixture against Fulham in North London saw Johnson make a small cameo off the bench, but on this occasion, he’ll be expected to start for Spurs in what is a must-win game for them in their quest to finish inside the top four. When factoring in the potency of Spurs going forward, Johnson may well profit again with a healthy fantasy haul.
