THE TEAM NEWS

ENGLAND

  • For the first time since August of last year, England finally tasted victory once again in Test match cricket, beating New Zealand by five wickets at Lord’s after a successful run chase of 277 in their 4th innings, led by the indomitable Joe Root, who struck an unbeaten 115 to help guide his side home, passing 10,000 Test runs in the process.
  • After suffering concussion attempting to prevent a boundary on Day 1 of the first Test, spin-bowler Jack Leach was replaced by Lancashire’s Matt Parkinson, who acted as a concussion substitute for the rest of the match, but Leach has since recovered and will play in the second Test.
  • England will name an unchanged line-up following victory with the bowling trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Matt Potts all shining at Lord’s, the latter taking seven wickets on debut, whilst on the batting front both Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow will have another opportunity despite Yorkshire’s Harry Brook snapping at their heels for a chance of his own.

NEW ZEALAND

  • New Zealand had fought back brilliantly in the first Test after being bowled out for just 132 in their 1st innings, but after a collapse in their 2nd innings which reduced them from 251/5 to 285 all out, their bowlers were left defending a total smaller than they would have liked and ultimately ran out of steam as Root wore them down.
  • A nightmare Test for Colin de Grandhomme saw him run out for 0 with the bat, before bowling Ben Stokes off a no ball in the 4th innings, with the England skipper going onto make a crucial 54 and to make matters worse, de Grandhomme suffered a torn heel whilst bowling which has ruled him out for the rest of the series.
  • Captain Kane Williamson has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss the second Test, so Tom Latham will deputise as captain, whilst all-rounder Michael Bracewell and batter Hamish Rutherford have both been brought into the Black Caps squad as de Grandhomme and Williamson's replacements respectively.

THE PREDICTION

Make no mistake, questions will continue to be asked about England’s unstable batting line-up despite a successful run chase, as it cannot be forgotten that they were bowled out for just 141 in their 1st innings. However, whilst Joe Root is around, England have a chance with the willow and they will be relieved that their star man remains in excellent touch. Trent Bridge is a ground that normally provides far more comfort for the batters compared to Lord’s and a significantly higher scoring affair is expected here. However, whilst England’s batting issues have been spoken about at length, New Zealand are quietly suffering from a similar problem. Captain Kane Williamson currently remains out of touch, although he won't feature in the second Test and the New Zealand openers were unable to cope with England’s quicker bowlers at Lord's.

On his home ground, Stuart Broad will provide an extremely stiff challenge for the Black Caps batters, alongside long-time bowling partner Anderson, whilst Matt Potts has made the step up to international cricket seamlessly so far and could be afforded more joy in this second Test. Most importantly, is the fact that both Root and skipper Ben Stokes have started the series well and can provide the catalyst to further success at Trent Bridge. The confidence garnered from their Lord’s win may just galvanise England further, so back the hosts to record back-to-back Test victories here.
