THE LOWDOWN

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Three-time champion Djokovic has reason to be confident after producing an excellent performance in beating the talented Karen Khachanov in straight sets on Monday.
  • The Serb has an excellent record against Nishikori having lost just twice in 15 meetings and he has already got the better of his Japanese opponent twice in 2018 (Madrid and Rome).
  • Djokovic is seeking to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time since the US Open in 2016 and has shown signs of approaching his best form at the All England Club this year.

KEI NISHIKORI

  • Nishikori is enjoying his best run at Wimbledon having never previously gone beyond the fourth round and it appears as if his injury problems are not hindering him too much at the moment.
  • He has certainly not had a straightforward route to the quarter-finals having been taken to four sets by three of his opponents to date, but he will have been delighted with how he came through a testing encounter with Ernests Gulbis in the fourth round.
  • Nishikori is on a 12-match losing run against Djokovic and will need to overcome the mental challenge of facing an opponent he has struggled against, but this will be their first meeting on grass so that will offer him some hope of causing the Serb problems.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

It has been a tough road back to form for Djokovic following elbow surgery but there have been some positive signs during his path to this quarter-final and genuine belief that he is ready to challenge for major titles again. Nishikori is an opponent he has had the number of in recent years so the Serb has to be favoured to progress, but it will be an attritional battle between two players with a similar style and that could result in a nip-and-tuck contest. Nishikori will provide a stern test and could pick up at least a set along the way, but Djokovic has another gear and should prevail.
