THE TEAM NEWS

WEST INDIES

Captain: Jason Holder

  • Although they couldn’t secure a series whitewash from the Test matches, the West Indies head into this ODI series full of confidence after comfortably seeing off England and will be hoping to replicate their form here.

  • One man to benefit from his performances in the Test arena is John Campbell with the big-hitting opener receiving his first ODI call-up and is likely to be given his chance to shine ahead of the World Cup with Evin Lewis a late withdrawal.

  • Rovman Powell and Keemo Paul are also out of the squad having sustained injuries whilst Shannon Gabriel is suspended which means a recall for Carlos Braithwaite and Sheldon Cottrell to strengthen the bowling unit.

ENGLAND

Captain: Eoin Morgan

  • England performed poorly in the three-match Test series against the West Indies and despite salvaging some pride with a good win in the final match, they will be hoping that the 50-over format of the game can bring them more joy.

  • The tourists warmed up for this game with a solid win in their warm-up game which saw Jason Roy and Joe Root both notch centuries but Alex Hales will be disappointed having only lasted two balls batting at six.

  • World Cup places are very much up for grabs in this series and Hales will need to show his worth with Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood also fighting for their places with the likes of Tom Curran pushing for a call-up in the starting XI.

THE PREDICTION

With the Test series behind them, England and the West Indies turn their attention to the ODI format with a five-match series. The tourists will be hoping for more consistent performances in the 50-over format after what can only be described as a poor Test series despite their win in the final game. With the World Cup in the not-too distant future, places in the squad and the starting XI in particular are still not secure for both teams but it’s the English players that can impress more with a win in the first ODI.
