THE TEAM NEWS

DURHAM JETS

Coach: Jon Lewis

Captain: Tom Latham

  • The Durham Jets were written off for this tournament at the start of the season but the underdogs have risen to the challenge and been the revelation of the group stage as they finished second to Worcestershire on net run rate after nine wins from 14 matches.

  • After initially being ruled out of this match with a knee problem, Ben Stokes has been given permission by England to play in this crunch match but he will play as a specialist batsman only.

  • James Weighell has a broken hand and Liam Trevaskis is stricken with glandular fever so they miss out, while new signings Alex Lees & Axar Patel are not eligible to play in this competition as all-rounder Scott Steel comes into the 13-man squad.

SUSSEX SHARKS

Coach: Jason Gillespie

Captain: Luke Wright

  • Sussex won their last three matches in this competition to reach the quarter-finals and they also come off an outstanding win in the County Championship as they hammered Derbyshire by 253 runs as their players are in great form right now.

  • Skipper Luke Wright missed that game as he eases himself back after a back problem but he will be available here and he showed his value in the last group stage match as he smashed 74 from 48 balls to help lead his side to victory.

  • Despite losing Rashid Khan to international duty, they still managed to win their final group games and the likes of Briggs, Jordan, Mills, Robinson and Archer have been in exceptional form in recent weeks.

THE PREDICTION

Sussex’s t20 Blast campaign took some time to get going as they were hampered by four abandonments due to rain. They did however end the group stage in emphatic fashion and managed to win their last three matches to qualify, proving they could produce when the pressure was on.

Durham were comfortably in the top four for long spells of the group stage and were superb throughout. They are boosted by the inclusion of Stokes for this game as a batsman but his bowling absence will not be missed too much as he has largely been absent during the group stage anyway. His involvement will only serve to further enhance Durham’s superb attitude and endeavour, though it is difficult to see them beating this quality Sussex side. They have the edge in all departments, and have travelled well too in this competition so expect a victory for the visitors in this second quarter-final.
