22-year-old Xinyu Wang came into the China Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 37th and she will snap that once again after beating Vera Zvonareva in straight sets on Monday. The Chinese number three could enjoy a transformative week here in Beijing if she can find a way past world number 13 Daria Kasatkina, who has been vulnerable throughout 2023 despite occasional brilliance on tour. 26-year-old Kasatkina came back from a set down to beat Mayar Sherif in a deciding tiebreak on Monday and if she cannot improve on that performance Wang stands a huge chance at a career-best victory in front of adoring home fans. Wang reached the round of 16 at the US Open last month to prove her credentials on this surface and a partisan support should see her earn at least a set in this first encounter with Kasatkina. Take the Chinese to do so or consider a one off on her to cause the full upset.
