Current world number 202 Aljaz Bedene qualified for Wimbledon on a protective ranking after a long injury lay-off, from which he is still returning. The 32-year-old impressed at Roland-Garros with a run to the third round before a straight-sets defeat to Novak Djokovic and he also made the third round here last season as well as in 2017. World number 176 Maximilian Marterer qualified the hard way this week to make the main draw at Wimbledon for only a second time. The 27-year-old is yet to win a match at SW19 but with Bedene’s sticking power still a relative unknown backing the Slovenian to win at least two sets as the likelier victor seems a suitably cautious approach. Bedene beat Marterer in their only previous meeting back in 2019.
