THE LOWDOWN

DOMINIC THIEM

  • Dominic Thiem proved he has all the ability needed to be a Grand Slam contender next season after an astounding three-set victory over Novak Djokovic, who was confounded in places in their mammoth match.
  • The Austrian has markedly improved his hard-court game this season, winning Indian Wells earlier this year before further titles in Beijing and Vienna, and his daring shot-making against the Serb throughout their match on Tuesday night was spectacular.
  • The 26-year-old has already qualified for the semi-finals after beating both Djokovic and Roger Federer in the match before and now faces an easier time of it against Matteo Berettini, whom he beat recently on his way to the Vienna title.

MATTEO BERRETTINI

  • Matteo Berrettini looked flat towards the end of his second ATP Finals match with Roger Federer as his fledgling dreams of reaching the semi-finals has ended, but he put up a good fight in the first set and was in control of the tiebreak before Federer produced some trademark pressure play.
  • The 23-year-old can now look forward to playing in a very exciting Italian Davis Cup team next week, but not before he plays an in-form Dominic Thiem, whom he would have targeted as a winnable match-up before the week and will believe he can beat.
  • Berrettini is on the wrong end of a 2-1 head-to-head record with Dominic Thiem but did beat him as recently as last month at the Shanghai Masters, a bigger event and stage than where Thiem exacted his revenge at Vienna later in October – and in straight sets.

THE PREDICTION

The pressure is off Dominic Thiem now after two fantastic displays against the generation he is trying to overcome in Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, but no player in the top 10, maybe 20, is more susceptible to a shock loss after such aplomb. Matteo Berettini beat Thiem in straight sets at last month’s Shanghai Masters in a tournament the Austrian was looking like a contender for too, and he must not be underestimated. The Italian’s powerful game can break the rhythm of someone like Thiem and the pressure is also off the 23-year-old, as he cannot progress any further. This should go to a deciding set, with Berrettini notoriously hard to break when he’s in the mood, but you have to fancy Dominic Thiem for a clean sweep in his group.
