THE LOWDOWN

JOHN ISNER

  • 34-year-old John Isner’s last competitive match was a first-round exit to Chile’s Cristian Garin at the Paris Masters in late October, and he also started 2019 with two early exits.
  • American veteran Isner has great experience and success playing for his country, and beat Alexander Zverev at the Laver Cup last September before missing out on the Davis Cup.
  • Isner was victorious in his only previous meeting with Casper Ruud in the first round of Wimbledon 2019, coming through comfortably enough in straight sets.

CASPER RUUD

  • Norwegian starlet Casper Ruud reached a career-high 54th in the ATP world rankings in August in what was a breakout year for the 21-year-old.
  • Ruud featured at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan last November where he won just one of his three matches, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina but losing to Miomir Kecmanovic and Alex de Minaur.
  • Kecmanovic and De Minaur went on to play at the Davis Cup, however, and are at this moment in time a level above Ruud but this should be another progressive year for the Nord.

THE PREDICTION

John Isner’s 2019 did not get off to the best of starts with two early exits in Australian tournaments, and he will have to hit the ground running here with a spritely 21-year-old over the net. Casper Ruud claimed a few scalps in 2019, including a Nick Kyrgios meltdown in Rome, but on paper he should find himself on the losing side here once again. Isner is a seasoned pro at playing for his country, where he finds a little extra, and beat Ruud in straight sets in their previous match.
