World number four Aryna Sabalenka played her best match to date at Wimbledon to reach a first Grand Slam semi-final by beating fans favourite Ons Jabeur in straight sets. The 23-year-old overpowered Jabeur from the off but seemed to employ more tactical control than we have seen so far this campaign to upset the Tunisian’s rhythm and rush her into mistakes. Sabalenka has been threatening a run like this for some time and currently has the most wins on tour this year with a fabulous 34/10 record, though she has occasionally bombed out of a tournament.
The second seed here will face world number 13 Karolina Pliskova after the tall Czech dominated play against Viktorija Golubic on Tuesday to win her fifth-successive straight-sets match at Wimbledon. Pliskova’s talent, especially her near-perfect serve, has never been called into question but her form at SW19 has come as a surprise after a poor Spring. Still, the 29-year-old former US Open finalist is also through to her first semi-final here and a third meeting with Sabalenka.
Sabalenka has won both of their previous encounters in three sets, including on grass at the Eastbourne International. Whilst Pliskova has looked the more consistent this campaign she is yet to face a seeded player, although Golubic, Liudmila Samsonova and Tamara Zidansek were all in-form coming into Wimbledon. There is always a degree of uncertainty with Sabalenka and especially when she is the favourite but Pliskova’s confidence could be rocked if she drops the first set here. Take the second seed to win at least a set in this tight semi-final, or perhaps for a total of three sets needed to separate the pair for a third time.
