THE PREDICTION

10th seed Denis Shapovalov played out a topsy-turvy five-set slog with in-form Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday in which he gained the lead three times against the German veteran. That kind of opening match should do the Canadian the world of good considering his greatest foe in these early rounds is his own potential complacency and he should be better for it against world number 70 Pablo Andujar.

The Spaniard has enjoyed an excellent renaissance this season, most notably over a solid clay swing in which he beat Roger Federer for the first time at the Geneva Open and Dominic Thiem over five sets at Roland-Garros. The 35-year-old is a wily all-court competitor but certainly favours the grass, although a five-set victory over in-form Pierre-Hugues Herbert yesterday says different.

World number 12 Shapovalov was the winner in their previous encounter at the 2019 Australian Open in straight sets but Andujar’s recent exploits make this an exciting prospect indeed. Andujar has a really enthralling self-belief about him right now and he should be backed to win at least a set off 22-year-old Shapovalov, with the youngster likely to lose focus at least once in this five-set format.
