THE LOWDOWN

MARIA SAKKARI

World number 18 Maria Sakkari will be one to watch at Wimbledon as the Greek’s star continues to rise on the WTA tour. The 25-year-old still has just one WTA title to her name claimed in 2019 but she has been there or thereabouts throughout 2021. Sakkari beat defending Roland-Garros champion Iga Swiatek earlier this month before losing in the semi-finals to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova. However, she has not played a grass tournament as preparation for Wimbledon and that could come back to haunt her.

ARANTXA RUS

Arantxa Rus made the semi-finals of the Bad Homburg Open in the Women’s Doubles for some useful grass-court practice but she lost to Alize Cornet in the first round of the Singles. The 30-year-old is not far off her career-high WTA world ranking of 61st at her current placing in 84th but she likely has more stock in the Doubles draw here. Rus made the round of 16 at Roland-Garros way back in 2012 to post her best showing at a Grand Slam but she has lost in the first round of her last four campaigns.

THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Maria Sakkari will be looking to beat her best placing here at Wimbledon by reaching the second week and the Greek star is well capable of doing so. The 25-year-old is an immensely powerful, charismatic player who looks set to become a first-time Grand Slam champion sooner rather than later, though perhaps not on the grass. Sakkari has reached two semi-finals this season and beaten the likes of Naomi Osaka, Sofia Kenin and Garbine Muguruza in an excellent 2021 so far. Arantxa Rus will be a positive force on the other side of the court but the 30-year-old will likely have more stock in the Women’s Doubles here as the 15th seed alongside Viktoria Kuzmova. Take Sakkari to blast through in two as she has in both of their previous meetings.
