World number 102 Dennis Novak started his 2021 season off strongly with a big scalp by beating Fabio Fognini ins traight sets at the ATP Cup but the Austrian lost his next two matches before a solid comeback here in Montpellier. The 27-year-old is through to his first ever quarter-final on tour and has an excellent opportunity here against German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk. 31-year-old Gojowczyk beat the eighth seed and German number two in Jan-Lennard Struff to kick things off here and came through a tight tussle with Jiri Vesely on Thursday and the world number 144 has pedigree for indoor tournaments in France. Gojowczyk won his only ATP title to date at the 2017 Metz Open in similar conditions to these and he will be combative throughout against a fellow tireless opponent in Novak. It does seem like the Austrian’s time after a couple of recent runs in events over the past 12 months, though, but both players can take a set in a win for Novak here.
