THE LOWDOWN

World number 115 Beatriz Haddad-Maia failed to qualify for Indian Wells but she was fortunate to come through as a lucky loser to replace Nadia Podoroska. The 25-year-old lost to Monica Puig here in 2018 on her debut but the opportunity to reach the third round with just one match played should give her a huge boost in a winnable tie here. Egypt’s Mayar Sherif is in great form, though, and up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 72nd after success on the Challenger circuit. Sherif, also 25, reached the final of the Winners Open in Romania back in August where she lost to Andrea Petkovic.

THE PREDICTION

This is a huge opportunity for one of Mayar Sherif and Beatriz Haddad-Maia to reach the third round of a Masters event and the onus to perform is firmly with the Egyptian now as she faces a lucky loser. We have seen plenty of examples this season of players taking that second chance with both hands and, with this first meeting tough to discern, taking Haddad-Maia to win at least a set for that reason seems a shrewd move.
