In what could well end up the widest gulf of an upset on tout this year, already, American wildcard Chris Harrison beat the top seed and world number 22 Cristian Garin in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals at Delray Beach. In only his fourth victory at tour-level, the 26-year-old world number 789 overcame the Chilean in an initially tight first set that went to a tiebreak before motoring through to the quarter-finals. It is such a shame for Harrison, who has been kept back by an inordinate amount of injuries over the years, to not have a home crown cheering him here but he has eclipsed the shock win of his next opponent, Gianluca Mager, who beat Sam Querrey in much the same fashion. The Italian is a real enigma in recent times and also threatened to build on his ATP ranking early last season on the South American clay swing. To add more interest to this unlikely match-up, Mager beat Harrison’s brother, Ryan, in the first round on Thursday in three sets. It is perhaps too romantic to suggest that Chris Harrison will be able to avenge his brother but the power of the momentum gained by taking out the top seed cannot be underestimated here either. He could at least emulate his brother by taking the Italian to a deciding set but, as a one-off punt, the heart says Chris Harrison can continue his incredible Delray Beach journey with the win here.
