THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis came close to beating an in-form Alex Bolt at the Murray River Open last week in his first competitive match since 2019 and he received a wildcard to the Australian Open first round. The enigmatic Aussie will face South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon, who lost to Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round of the Great Ocean Road Open last week. Both Kokkinakis and Kwon have flattered to deceive in their young careers and this match could go either way, though it is possible that the home crowd could be a deciding factor in this match-up. Kwon has made the second round of a Grand Slam only once, though Kokkinakis’ record is not much better. Both players should win a set in this one, if not two each, and it is probably best to leave the selection there. At a push, a one-off punt on the home player Kokkinakis could well come off.
