THE PREDICTION

Potugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva played exceptionally well in the Australian Open qualifiers last month to make the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old faces an unwelcome task though of playing the villain against Australia’s favoured son Nick Kyrgios, who has transformed his image in his homeland over the last few years into one of reverence and support again. The crowd will almost unanimously be behind the 25-year-old and if he is in the mood to entertain at this Australian Open he will be a threat to anyone. Kyrgios may well struggle early-on after playing so few matches last season due to an admirable position on the coronavirus pandemic but he got in some good match practice at the Murray River Open this past week and should be able to take this match in straight sets.
