Tommy Paul broke Alexander Bublik four times on his way to a three-set victory over the Kazakh, who began to throw in the towel after losing the second set. Nevertheless, Paul’s performance was exceptional, especially his service game, and he will be a tough opponent for anybody in this form over the next few months. He faces Marton Fucsovics for a second career time after the Hungarian put him out of the third round of the Australian Open last year following an incredible five-set victory over Grigor Dimitrov. Fucsovics came through the qualifiers here to reach the quarter-finals via strong performances over Reilly Opelka and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and the Rotterdam Open’s conditions suit the “Iron Man of Tennis” well. He spoiled Paul’s party once before and could well do again here, though a result looks too difficult to side with between the world number 56 and 59. Both players are partial to a tiebreak and so it could be worth opting for at least one in what should be a rugged quarter-final and leaving it at that.
