In one of the picks of the round of 16 Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev will face each other for the third time in their careers with the Australian chasing a first win over the world number five. The pair have not played since 2018, where Medvedev first beat De Minaur in the Sydney Open final to win his first of now seven ATP titles. Medvedev also beat De Minaur on his way to his second title later that year at the Winston-Salem Open in a year when these players were at the tail-end of the top 50. Two years on, both players look set to grace the highest echelons of the ATP rankings for many years to come and this match seems to be on a knife-edge. Medvedev is the better player on their respective days but he has been slightly under par of late and De Minaur’s performances so far in Paris have been exceptional. The 21-year-old took out the man on fire, Lorenzo Sonego, in straight-sets on Wednesday as his frightening speed negated much of the Italian’s game. De Minaur reached the final of the European Open two weeks ago and his form could provide an upset in this match. For want of a tricky result, the Australian looks the likeliest to take the first set. After that it will be up to Medvedev to respond.
