THE LOWDOWN

DOMINIC THIEM

  • Dominic Thiem was masterful against world number one Rafael Nadal to beat the Spaniard in four sets in their quarter-final match, with all of the Austrian’s sets coming in very impressive tiebreak performances.
  • The 26-year-old has been Nadal’s main foe on clay for years but he managed two feats by winning this match in claiming both his first ever Grand Slam victory over Nadal and his first on a hard court, where the two clay specialists are more equal.
  • Thiem leads a healthy 6-2 head-to-head record over Alexander Zverev and beat the German in a semi-final as recently as last November, in straight sets at the ATP Finals.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

  • Alexander Zverev dropped the first set of his quarter-final clash with Stan Wawrinka but managed to come through in four sets as the fatigue from the Swiss’ five-set match with Medvedev started to show.
  • The German number one came into the first major of the year with no real form behind him but has quietly gone about reaching his maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the age of 22.
  • World number seven Zverev’s biggest tennis achievement to date was a title-winning campaign at the end-of-year ATP Finals in 2018 but this is his most convincing Grand Slam form for some time.

THE PREDICTION

This match between two of the game’s best players is one of so many possible outcomes depending on their mindsets coming into this semi-final. Few would have thought that Alexander Zverev or Dominic Thiem would be in the last four in Melbourne after their ATP Cup campaigns, but the pair have exploded into form since. Their head-to-head record might be a source of comfort for Thiem’s camp but Zverev is in uncharted waters in his first Grand Slam semi-final and is the kind of player who can up his level accordingly. However, the version of Dominic Thiem who beat Rafael Nadal on Wednesday can win this match, and if he does, this version of Thiem will be a very tough challenge for one of Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic in the final.
