Who won the last meeting between Thiago Monteiro vs Benoit Paire? Benoit Paire beat Thiago Monteiro 7-6, 6-3

  • 25-year-old Thiago Monteiro came through New Zealand’s Ajeet Rai and a close battle with Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer in the qualifiers to make it to the ASB Classic main draw.
  • The world number 87 did well to then overcome an out-of-form Cameron Norrie, who had come straight from the ATP Cup in Australia, in straight sets to reach this stage.
  • Monteiro won three Challenger events last year all on his favoured clay surface and he is the highest-ranked Brazilian at 87th - the only within the top 100 players in the world.

  • Benoit Paire overcame a difficult challenger in 2019 Next Gen Finals champion Jannik Sinner, who came back in the second set but the Frenchman rallied to take the decider.
  • 30-year-old Paire won two of his three singles matches at the inaugural ATP Cup last week, including against eventual Serbian champion Dusan Lajovic, but could not overcome South Africa’s Kevin Anderson to reach the latter stages.
  • The world number 24 is seeded fifth at the ASB Classic and will be confident of beating his next opponent in Thiago Monteiro, just as he did the previous and only time they faced each other in Pune last year.

This should be a fairly straightforward win for Benoit Paire against a clay specialist with few weapons against the top players on tour. A win last year over Jan-Lennard Struff represents his biggest tour win for some time and although he conquered Cameron Norrie in the previous round, Paire is a much tougher challenge. With his ATP Cup form behind him, the French fifth seed should coast through in two sets here.
