NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Novak Djokovic was gracious in defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open earlier this month, which was his second loss to the talented young Russian this year.
  • The world number one is in the hunt for his fourth US Open title and enters the draw as first seed and reigning champion after his defeat of Juan Martin del Potro in last year’s final.
  • The Serb started off last year’s tournament with two shaky performances against Marton Fucsovics and Tennys Sandgren following his Cincinnati win, but could come into this year’s tournament keen to put his semi-final loss behind him.

ROBERTO CARBALLES BAENA

  • Roberto Carballes Baena has been handed the toughest draw possible in the first round of the US Open as he faces reigning champion and world #1 Novak Djokovic in what could be a short and sweet time in this tournament.
  • The Spaniard is 17-17 this year and has endured a difficult time in the major competitions after claiming just one win which came over a much lower-ranked opponent in Alexandre Muller in the French Open.
  • Carballes Baena has never faced Djokovic before but will have to improve on his recent form having failed to defeat an opponent ahead of him in the world rankings since May.

THE PREDICTION

Novak Djokovic currently holds three of the four Grand Slam titles and will not want to relinquish his US Open crown. He comes into this tournament on the back of claiming the Wimbledon title and is fancied to go the distance once again at Flushing Meadows. He faces Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round and he should be able to make light work of the Spaniard who is likely to be outclassed by the Serb.
