BORNA CORIC

  • 12th-seed Borna Coric got past a tricky first-set tiebreak with Evgeny Donskoy to come through in straight sets and reach the second round at the US Open.
  • Coric has had an excellent season as he has reached two semi-finals and four quarter-finals in ATP events this year and unfortunately missed Wimbledon through injury.
  • The 22-year-old Croatian number one lost out at the round of 16 stage at last year’s US Open to the eventual runner-up and former champion Juan Martin del Potro.

GRIGOR DIMITROV

  • Grigor Dimitrov beat Italy’s Andreas Seppi in four sets in the first round to set-up a first-time meeting with Croatia’s rising star Borna Coric.
  • Dimitrov will be glad to see Swiss number two Stan Wawrinka far away from him in the draw here as the former US Open champion has put the Bulgarian out of three of his last seven tournaments, including the last two.
  • 28-year-old Dimitrov also lost to Wawrinka in the first round of last year’s US Open but he has previously reached as far as the round of 16 on two occasions, in 2014 and 2016.

THE PREDICTION

Borna Coric has gone under the radar somewhat towards the end of 2019, not least of all down to him missing Wimbledon last month after getting injured in the quarter-finals at Halle whilst he was building some excellent grass-court form. He has plenty to prove as the 12th seed here but faces a player in Grigor Dimitrov who has top 10 talent hidden away somewhere inside him that we rarely get to see these days. The Bulgarian played well against Seppi in the first round, but Coric looks set to be the victor.
