Last meeting:

  • Bianca Andreescu lost the first set of her US Open campaign in the round of 16 to Taylor Townsend but ultimately came through the contest in assured fashion.
  • The Canadian youngster is rewriting her own history with each round she reaches at Flushing Meadows having previously reached only the second rounds of the Australian Open and Roland-Garros this year.
  • Andreescu has a real chance of reaching the US Open final on her debut at the tournament as she is perhaps the most dangerous opponent left on her side of the draw. There she could face Serena Williams again just weeks after beating the American in unfortunate circumstances in the Rogers Cup when William retired hurt, but first she will have to get past Mertens here.

  • 23-year-old Elise Mertens played the villain in ending Kristie Ahn’s unlikely US Open campaign in a commanding straight-sets victory.
  • The Belgian 25th seed is one of a handful of players left in the entire tournament to have not dropped a set so far, although it must be said that barring Kristyna Pliskova, she has had a very kind draw.
  • Mertens has reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam just once at the Australian Open in 2018, and while she has been consistently in or around the last 16 of her last seven Slams, she has a great opportunity to progress far in this tournament.

At 23 years old, it would seem Elise Mertens is the more experienced and elder player in this match-up with Canadian starlet Bianca Andreescu, and she will need to utilise all of that in front of a crowd that will not be against the Belgian number one, but will certainly be for Andreescu. The teenager has captured the hearts and imagination of a US Open crowd with her superb performances, and her title win in Montreal last month, albeit helped by an injury to Serena Williams, puts her in great stead to get past a sturdy player in Mertens.
