THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
Denis Shapovalov beat Frances Tiafoe 6-7, 6-4, 6-2

FRANCES TIAFOE

  • Frances Tiafoe has now lost to Alexander Zverev in his last two matches with a five-set thriller in the second round of the US Open and a first round loss at the China Open last week.
  • Tiafoe's season has tailed off somewhat following an excellent early 2019 campaign, although his valiant loss to Zverev at the US Open showed he is future top 20 material.
  • The American starlet has lost two of the three meetings with Denis Shapovalov, winning the first at Delray Beach, Florida in 2018 but twice since to the Canadian in deciding sets.

DENIS SHAPOVALOV

  • Dennis Shapovalov lost in the round of 16 at the Japan Open in straight sets to David Goffin but previously made the semi-finals of the Chengdu Open in China.
  • The young Canadian has been in fine form in the latter stages of this season and has moved two places up to world number 32, 12 places away from his highest rank of 20 earlier this year.
  • 20-year-old Shapovalov will be aiming to win his first match at the Shanghai Masters having lost in the first round in two consecutive tournaments.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a fantastic first round match-up between two exciting young talents, with an added North American rivalry. Denis Shapovalov has sandwiched an average mid-season with a strong start and finish to 2019, and with that it seems he strongly favours a hard court, the same as Frances Tiafoe. The American has come off the boil somewhat despite his US Open efforts, and could lose out in another tight contest between these next gen stars.
