THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
John Isner beat Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-2

ALEX DE MINAUR

  • Australian starlet Alex de Minaur recently won his second title of the year at the Zhuhai Championships by overcoming the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut, Borna Coric and Adrian Mannarino in the final.
  • As so often happens after a title win, De Minaur could not replicate his sparkling Zhuhai form as he lost in the first round of the Japan Open to South Africa’s Lloyd Harris, but he comes into this tournament as a dark horse for a deep run.
  • 20-year-old De Minaur is entering his second Shanghai Masters and played well at his maiden campaign last year before losing to Alexander Zverev in the round of 16.

JOHN ISNER

  • 34-year-old John Isner overcame two tough tests against Gael Monfils and Dan Evans to reach the quarter-finals of the China Open where he then lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.
  • The American is entering is ninth Shanghai Masters in the hope of progressing past the round of 16 for the first time, having lost at that stage on three previous occasions.
  • World number 19 Isner holds the sole victory between these players, beating Alex de Minaur in straight sets on a hard court at the Atlanta Open in 2018.

THE PREDICTION

Alex de Minaur could be one to watch for this tournament as he has been in eye-catching form lately, after remaining fairly conspicuous for most of 2019. He will have to beat John Isner for the first time if he is to live up to his Zhuhai title-winning form, but the American is also looking in great shape after a 2019 to forget. The pair have already faced each other in the doubles at this tournament, with Isner and Sam Querrey getting the better of De Minaur and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, but the young Australian can exact immediate revenge here.
