THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
Marin Cilic beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 6-4

ALBERT RAMOS-VINOLAS

  • Albert Ramos-Vinolas lost in the first round of the China Open to Felix Auger-Aliassime last time out in straight sets.
  • Ramos-Vinolas has shown some hard-court form in his semi-finals exit at the Zhuhai Championships the week before his China Open exit, beating Gael Monfils en route to a three-set loss to Adrian Mannarino there.
  • The Spanish world number 44 has reached the quarter finals at the Shanghai Masters in 2017, where he lost to his opponent here Cilic in straight sets.

MARIN CILIC

  • 31-year-old Marin Cilic lost out to resurgent South Korean Hyeon Chung in the round of 16 at the Japan Open last week, following a decent showing at the US Open.
  • World number 30 Cilic is entering his 10th Shanghai Masters and reached as far as the semi-finals at this tournament in 2017 but lost out to old foe Rafael Nadal in straight sets.
  • The Croat leads a healthy 4-2 head-to-head record with Albert Ramos-Vinolas and a 3-1 record on hard courts, including the aforementioned quarter-final win in Shanghai.

THE PREDICTION

Albert Ramos-Vinolas is a clay specialist, like so many Spaniards, but he has pedigree at this event and showed in his recent semi-finals exit at Zhuhai that he has plenty of talent on hard courts too. He faces an old foe in Marin Cilic for the seventh time for a Shanghai Masters rematch, with the Croat in good health if not his peak form. The Spaniard could cause a minor upset here by beating Cilic, but with five of their six meetings settled in straight sets, a deciding set looks unlikely.
