THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
John Isner beat Jordan Thompson 6-4, 6-1

JORDAN THOMPSON

  • Australia’s Jordan Thompson reached a career-high 43rd in the ATP world rankings after Wimbledon last month but has since dropped to 46 after earliest-opportunity exits in Newport and Atlanta.
  • 25-year-old Thompson was having a decent season by his standards before his first-round exit to compatriot Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon and has a mammoth 23-17 record for 2019.
  • Thompson almost won the first ATP title of his career at the Libema Open in the Netherlands before Wimbledon, losing in the final to Adrian Mannarino, but his hard-court form so far this year has left much to be desired.

JOHN ISNER

  • World number 15 John Isner got over his Wimbledon exit to Mikhail Kukushkin by beating another Kazakh, Alexander Bublik, to win the Hall of Fame Open in Rhode Island.
  • The 34-year-old looked to be nearing his peak form after returning from injury, but two early exits in Atlanta and Washington to Reilly Opelka and Benoit Paire respectively suggest his time at the top might be winding down.
  • John Isner has the lead in a 2-0 head-to-head record with Jordan Thompson and won their previous hard-court encounter this year at the New York Open.

THE PREDICTION

Jordan Thompson is a difficult player to call confidently, as he has the ability to up his game when backed into a corner but there is a distinct lack of that extra quality needed to break the top 20. He faces John Isner, to whom he lost twice in two meetings, with the big-serving American looking vulnerable in places recently. However, a winner would be a hard thing to call, with a lot riding on attitude in this Montreal opener. Three of Isner’s matches went to the distance in Rhode Island, and that could likely be the case here.
