Last meeting:
Grigor Dimitrov beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7, 7-5

  • Grigor Dimitrov is demanding respect at this Paris Masters tournament after coming from behind to beat French starlet Ugo Humbert in the first round and then beating 12th seed David Goffin convincingly in the second.
  • The 28-year-old is looking sharper and fitter than at many points this year and is on the move up the ATP rankings, now 27th in the world, with these two Paris wins giving him an even 20-20 record for 2019.
  • Dimitrov beat his next opponent Dominic Thiem in their last encounter in his title-winning ATP Finals campaign two years ago but both players have changed a lot since.

  • Fifth seed Dominic Thiem won a tight first-set tiebreak against Milos Raonic but had to win the decider to get past the big-serving Canadian to reach the round of 16.
  • It was the tiebreak that really clinched it for the 25-year-old. With just one break point won each and fairly even stats, Thiem faced down 30 aces to come through victorious, showing a battling quality he has been lacking in parts this year.
  • The Austrian world number five shares a 2-2 head-to-head record with Grigor Dimitrov but is running on a six-match winning streak after taking the Vienna Open title last week.

Grigor Dimitrov must no longer be underestimated as he is proving to be near to his old self again after several frustrating years but even that might not be enough against a focused Dominic Thiem. The Austrian has appeared more vocal in recent weeks, and his increased venting seems to be helping his game where before he might shrug himself out of a match. This particular encounter looks destined for three sets, and after the Bulgarian’s efforts against Goffin it would not be out of the question that he can win this. Thiem, however, should see it through.
