In one of the great sporting rivalries of 2016, Argentina won the Davis Cup for the first time as Juan Martin del Potro avenged his Olympic final loss to Great Britain’s Andy Murray by defeating the then world number one and - by extent - the defending champions. That title is their only in this tournament to date, and without the great Del Potro many may consider Argentina a lesser prospect at these finals, but they have a strong top 30 representation in Diego Schwartzman who recently reached the quarter-finals of the US Open and won a tournament on a hard court in Mexico. World number 25 Guido Pella is also an excellent player and while his season has tailed off slightly, he also reached the last eight of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon in the summer.

Chile will be relying heavily on the talents of Cristian Garin, who has two ATP tour titles to his name this season and is coming off an excellent Paris Masters campaign where he showed he has a quick, if slightly under-powered hard-court game. Nicolas Jarry beat Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero to the Swedish Open title on clay back in July and has beaten the likes of Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov this year as he continues to show plenty of potential.
The atmosphere should be electric between these South American teams and Chile will feel like Argentina are there for the taking without their talisman Juan Matin del Potro, but Diego Schwartzman and Guido Pella should win their match-ups and could well feature in the doubles too if required. Ultimately, the Argentines have a better quality squad and the better players.
