THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting:
Yoshihito Nishioka beat David Goffin 6-7, 6-2, 7-6

YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA

  • Yoshihito Nishioka came through John Millman and Joao Sousa in the qualifiers to be here at Cincinnati and has not looked back with excellent wins over Jordan Thompson and Alex de Minaur, and one of the biggest wins of his career over Kei Nishikori on Wednesday.
  • 23-year-old Nishioka’s match with the Japanese number one brought him to the spotlight in his home country and he could ride the wave of his success here into a breakthrough Grand Slam campaign come the US Open.
  • Nishioka will have to repeat his recent efforts at the Citi Open where he beat his next opponent David Goffin in three hotly contested sets, with the players sharing a 1-1 head-to-head record.

DAVID GOFFIN

  • Davd Goffin was challenged by one of this season’s biggest movers Taylor Fritz in the first round at Cincinnati but has since not dropped a set and beat a competitive Adrian Mannarino in the round of 16 to face Yoshihito Nishioka for the second time this month.
  • The 29-year-old Belgian is 19th in the ATP world rankings and is aiming to match his best showing here of a semi-final place, achieved last year when he had to retire in the second set with Roger Federer.
  • David Goffin was beaten by Nishioka in Washington earlier this month but has form for taking revenge as recently as his second-round win over Guido Pella here, who beat him at the Rogers Cup last week.

THE PREDICTION

David Goffin is a classy player and makes up in intelligence and athleticism what he may lack in power as recent wins over Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev display. He beat Guido Pella a week after the Argentine defeated him, and will be working out how to topple the brimming confidence of Yoshihito Nishioka, two weeks after the Japanese number two beat him in Washington. Sometimes, as seen with Andrey Rublev’s campaign here, coming through the qualifiers can give a young player a momentum that requires an elite player to stop, but Goffin has the experience to not underestimate Nishioka again and reach his second Cincinnati semi-final.
