LAST MEETING
South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets

THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTH AFRICA

Captain: Faf du Plessis

  • Following their Test series defeat, South Africa bounced back in the first ODI as they comfortably beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets thanks in no small part to skipper Faf du Plessis’ unbeaten century as they chased down Sri Lanka’s 231.
  • Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi bowled well in the opening ODI and are both likely to keep their places in the team so the selectors may decide to give Kagiso Rabada a rest here and bring back veteran Dale Steyn after he was rested in the opening match.
  • Other than that possible change, the likelihood is that they name the same team in Centurion where the pitch is expected to play very similar to those in Johannesburg in the first match.

SRI LANKA

Captain: Lasith Malinga

  • Sri Lanka were comfortably beaten in the first ODI but they will not be too disheartened as they looked capable of posting a big score when batting first but the timing of the wickets along with a couple of foolish run-outs did not help their cause.
  • The bowling attack may see a reshuffle as they looked relatively harmless with their spin options especially not causing the hosts much alarm so it could see Sandakan make way for another pace bowler with Kasun Rajitha likely to come in.
  • There are unlikely to be changes to the batting line-up although they will hope for a better opening stand, while the lower order will have to contribute more with Thisara Perera in particular hoping to regain some of the stunning form he showed in New Zealand recently.

THE PREDICTION

South Africa regained some pride in the opening ODI in Johannesburg as they cruised to a comprehensive eight-wicket win and they will look to follow that up here. Sri Lanka will have been frustrated by their batting and not posting a bigger score so that has to be the case here if they are to challenge the hosts more. South Africa won that opening match with plenty to spare which suggests that even if the tourists improve, they can raise their performance levels another gear to beat them on a pitch that should play similar to the last one.
